Meet Marie

According to Marie Anderson, Somerset Community College changed her life.
 
“I came from a very poor background,” Anderson explained. “Finishing high school was all the education I was ever expected to complete.”
 
After moving to Somerset from Indiana, she worked at a number of dead-end jobs, including “being a personal driver, lifting heavy boxes, washing decks and even cleaning toilets,” Anderson said that she had had enough and she enrolled at SCC.
 
“SCC had an excellent reputation, but I had no idea about the wonderful journey I was about to embark upon,” she said.
 
Anderson said she found the admissions process to be easy.
 
“They made me feel comfortable and helped ease my apprehensions and fears.”
 
The academic counselors at SCC helped her take the first steps by helping her “choose what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.”
 
Anderson said that the professors at SCC were “positive, encouraging and very supportive.”
 
“They helped me believe in myself, make goals, and believe that I could attain those goals,” she explained. “It was very empowering.”
 
Initially, Anderson planned to pursue an associate degree in education and then transfer to a four-year university, but she ultimately chose the SCC Radiography Program, which she could complete in two years.
 
‘I found that I could finish school in a little over two years and start making good money,” she said.
 
Anderson graduated from SCC in 2005 with an Associate Degree in Radiography.
 
“I have a career that is in high demand. It lets me help people. I work with state-of-the-art equipment and I have great opportunities for advancement,” said Anderson.
 
Now, Anderson says that her choice to enroll at SCC was the “best decision of my life.”
 
“I absolutely love my career choice,” she said.
 
Anderson is currently working full-time as a Radiographer in Louisville and La Grange. She has cross-trained and become certified on using Computed Tomography (CT). She works with cancer patients as a Positron Emission Tomography (PET/CT) operator. She recently started training to become certified as a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Technician.
 
“With the degree I obtained at Somerset Community College, I believe, the possibilities are endless. SCC broadened my horizons and changed my life forever,” Anderson concluded.
