David Head of Somerset was recently awarded a United States Department of Health and Human Services Nursing Scholarship to attend Somerset Community College for the fall 2010 semester.
The Nursing Scholarship Program is a selective program of the United States Government that helps alleviate the critical shortage of registered nurses currently experienced in certain types of health care facilities. By helping needy students complete their registered nurse training, in exchange for the scholarship upon graduation, the newly minted nurses work at these types of facilities for at least two years.
For this highly competitive national scholarship, there were over seven thousand applicants, and Head was one of five hundred scholarship winners.
Head moved his family to Somerset in 2009, from Alaska, to attend the nursing program at SCC. When looking at nursing programs, what attracted him to the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program at SCC was the 100% pass rate on the national licensure exam and close proximity to family. After graduating from the ADN program at SCC, Head plans to continue his education with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and then conclude his education with a Doctorate of Nursing Practice and specialize in advanced practice emergency, family and acute nursing care.
