SCC PTA Program Hosts Area High School Camp

The Somerset Community College Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Program recently hosted junior high and high school students interested in a career in physical therapy in a two-day interactive workshop. The camp provided opportunities for students to participate in hands-on activities including exercise, balance, the use of crutches and wheelchairs and the use of physical therapy equipment.

The event was coordinated by PTA faculty member Claudette Prather.

“The purpose of this camp is to introduce these students to the field of physical therapy and to emphasize the importance of grades, developing good study habits and involvement in community service opportunities at an early age,” stated Prather. “The students were exposed to some of the technical aspects of our field as well as fun activities and competitions for prizes, such as wheelchair obstacle course and a relay race on crutches. This group of students was exceptional.  It was a joy to share part of their summer with them.”

This was the first year that the workshop has been offered, but the program plans to continue the program in coming years. Program faculty guided learning activities, with current program students sharing in teaching responsibilities.

“These students represent the future of our community and of the healthcare profession,” stated PTA Program Director Ron Meade. “We want to encourage them at an early age to excel and to begin exploring career options. This was such a positive event for our program that I cannot imagine not making it an annual event.”

The 2013 workshop will employ a selective admissions process for top students in the region and will be held in the summer. Applications will be made available in the spring of 2013. Students interested in attending the 2013 workshop may contact the event coordinator, Claudette Prather at claudette.prather@kctcs.edu for additional information.
