The Kentucky Physical Therapy Association, in conjunction with RahabCare, has announced the recipients of its 2012 KPTA All-Academic Team. Students from Kentucky’s Physical Therapist Assistant and Doctorate of Physical Therapy Programs are recognized annually by the association. Awards are competitively awarded based upon academic and clinical performance, extracurricular and community service activities, participation in physical therapy-related activities, leadership potential and a personal statement discussing the student’s career goals and the importance of advocacy within the profession.

Two Somerset Community College PTA Program graduates were named to this year’s team.

Brandon English of Lexington served as president of the SCC Physical Therapy Student Organization and was selected as the American Physical Therapy Association’s PTA Relations Project Committee Chairperson nationally. He was active in charitable events, including the Kentucky Special Olympics and the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk, and attended many national conferences while enrolled in the program.

Samantha Walls of Stanford served as SCC Student Government Association Vice-President and as the student body representative of the Somerset Community College Board of Directors. She has devoted time to several charitable organizations, including Big Brothers and Sisters of the Bluegrass, the Kentucky Special Olympics and fundraisers for cystic fibrosis research. She attended the APTA National Conference and Exposition in National Harbor, Maryland and travelled to Washington, DC to meet with legislators about physical therapy issues.

Other members of this year’s team include: Brandi Bennett, West Kentucky Community & Technical College PTA Program; Daniel C. Brown, University of Kentucky DPT Program; Patricia Ann Gregory, Jefferson Community & Technical College PTA Program; Rachel Halicks, West Kentucky Community & Technical College PTA Program; Christy Kaiser, Bellarmine University DPT Program; Christopher G. Pyles, Bellarmine University DPT Program; Katherine Anne Williams, Bellarmine University DPT Program; and Ziyan James Zhang, University of Kentucky DPT Program.

This is the second year that the KPTA has partnered with RehabCare in presenting the awards. RehabCare is a highly regarded provider of rehabilitative care and is nationally among the largest employer of physical, occupational and speech therapists.

The award recipients will be recognized at the KPTA Fall Conference on September 8 in Louisville, Kentucky.
