Somerset Community College’s Upward Bound Program recently took 34 students from Russell and Casey Counties to Chicago, Illinois following the conclusion of their six-week summer focus component of the program.

Students in the Upward Bound program earned this educational and culturally enhancing trip by satisfactorily participating in activities throughout the academic year and by successfully completing their summer classes.  While in Chicago, students visited Willis Tower (formerly known as the Sears Tower), The Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium and Oceanarium, Museum of Science and Industry, the Art Institute of Chicago, Navy Pier and Millennium Park.  In addition, students toured the University of Chicago, ate Chicago-style pizza at Giordano’s, took a private Improvisation Acting class with Annoyance Productions and saw a performance by Blue Man Group.

Upward Bound is a federally funded program designed to increase the rate at which eligible participants successfully complete high school, apply to college, enroll and then earn a college degree.  The program is free to eligible participants.  Students that are accepted into the Upward Bound Program at SCC receive college preparatory information, including but not limited to:

• Instruction in Math, Science, Language Arts, Composition and Foreign Language
• ACT preparation
• Assistance with college applications
• Assistance with completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
• College Tours/Visits
• Educational and Cultural trips (free to students)

In addition, students that participate in Upward Bound activities receive a monthly stipend for participating.

Upward Bound is open to freshmen, sophomore and junior students at Russell County High School and Casey County High School students.
