Twice a year the Somerset Community College Lions Club puts together a basket that is raffled off to help SCC students afford eye exams and glasses. This fall the club raised more than $500, of which 100 percent will be used to help students in need.

“We knew there would be a lot of need in this area,” said Melissa Winstead, a club member. “Since we started the project, we’ve been able to help 173 students and they are all so appreciative.”

The Lions Club is an international organization made up of 46,000 clubs and 1.35 million members, making it the world's largest service club organization. According to the Lions Club website, each club is focused on its own community and doing whatever work is needed to make local communities better.

Winstead said that the SCC Lions Club has been on campus since 1999 and has around 20 members.  The club has partnered with Dr. Eads at Wal-Mart Vision Center in Somerset to provide free eye exams to students they refer.  In addition, the club provides $100 for a new pair of glasses or lenses. Each student helped is required to fill out an application and demonstrate financial need.
