NLN Pre-Admission RN Exam

• Submit the NLN RN Pre-admission Exam Registration Form with the exam fee of $50.00 to the Assessment Center, located in the Strunk Building (Learning Commons) on the Somerset Campus North or the Assessment Center, located in Building 1, Room 155, on the Laurel Campus North. 
• No refunds will be given. 
• You must present your photo ID to the testing center proctor on the day of the test. 
• Test may only be taken one time within a year.
• Seating is limited so plan early.

Contents of Exam

The Pre-Admission RN Exam consists of three tests - Verbal Ability, Mathematics, and Science.  One hour is allowed for each test.

Verbal Ability

The Verbal Ability section consists of two subtests:  Word Knowledge and Reading Comprehension.  In the Word Knowledge section, the student is asked to identify the meaning of a word as it is used in a sentence.  Students use clues from the sentence and use deductive reasoning to identify the meaning of words.  The Reading Comprehension section of the test focuses on student’s reasoning and critical thinking ability.  Short passages about health problems and social issues require the student to analyze and interpret the material.  Questions assess the ability to determine main ideas and supporting details, draw conclusions, make inferences, and apply information to new situations.

Mathematics

The Mathematics test uses straight calculations and word problems to cover basic operations (integers, decimals, fractions, and percents), algebra, geometry, conversions, graphs, and concepts.  Data interpretation, applied mathematics, and scientific notation are included.  Calculators cannot be used during the mathematics portion of the exam.

Science

The Science test is an achievement measure of the student’s knowledge of general principles of chemistry, physics, general biology, and earth science. Most of the questions are concerned with information that has been acquired in secondary school.

Registering for the Exam

• You must register for the exam by completing the registration form and submitting it to the Assessment Center. 
• The cost of the exam is $50.00 and can be paid with cash, money orders, or personal checks. Money orders and personal checks are to be made payable to SCC. Payment must accompany registration form. 
• NO registering by phone will be accepted.
• No refunds will be given. Seating is limited, so please plan ahead. If the college is closed on the day of a scheduled test, test session will be rescheduled. Contact the Assessment Center when the campus reopens for the information on make-up test date.

You can purchase a test study guide from Jones & Bartlett Publishers. The title of the study guide is Review Guide for RN Pre-Entrance Exam, 3rd  Edition by Mary E. Test Site

All Pre-Admission RN exams will be held at Somerset Community College-Assessment Center. On the day of the exam all students will need to report to the Assessment Center for check-in.  Everyone will need to show a picture ID in order to check-in.

Scores

Performance on each of the three tests (verbal ability, mathematics, and science) is reported as both a raw score and as a percentile score. In addition, a composite score is provided. The composite score (a weighted combination of the scores on the three tests) is reported as a standard score as well as a percentile. Your composite percentile is the score that will be used in the point system. Now that you will be taking the test on-line, you will receive your results upon completion of the exam.

Testing Restrictions

The National League for Nursing recommends that no one be allowed to take the Pre-Admission RN Exam more than once in a 12 month period. Due to this recommendation, students at Somerset Community College will not be allowed to take the exam more than once during each admission cycle
