Somerset Community College’s Dual Credit program will benefit students by providing a seamless pathway to postsecondary education while reducing student expense and time to credential attainment: with the ultimate purpose, completion of a postsecondary credential.
Somerset Community College offers dual credit in area high schools as well as in area technology centers. The high schools offer general education courses that are a pathway to an Associate in Arts or an Associate in Science. We are presently offering Introductory Sociology, College Algebra, College Algebra Workshop, History of the US through 1865, History of the US Since 1865, Introduction to Biology, Ancient Through Medieval Art History, Renaissance Through Modern Art History and Elementary Spanish I. The courses offered are based on the availability of instructors. The area technology centers offer a variety of courses including Office Procedures, Visual Communication, Workplace Principles, Human Growth and Development, Blueprint Reading Construction, Medicaid Nurse Aide and many others based on the availability of instructors.
Somerset Community College (SCC) has worked with local schools in our service area for over 15 years. Over those 15 years, the dual credit program has grown into a partnership with 17 area technology centers and 7 high schools. The College offers dual credit courses and articulates other courses. These courses are taught at an area high school or area technology center by faculty who are credentialed and qualified to teach college-level courses. SCC waives the tuition for each of the courses, charging only a mandated service charge per semester. High School students enrolled in our dual credit/dual enrollment program also have the opportunity to enroll in high school and college at the same time taking online or on-campus courses at a discounted tuition rate.
Students in Pulaski, Laurel and Clay counties are also eligible to participate in the SEEK program which allows high school juniors and seniors to pursue post-secondary educational opportunities in technical programs. A SEEK student may enroll in up to a maximum of 9 credit hours of coursework per semester as approved by the School Counselor and receive a 100% Dual Credit Tuition Waiver. This program includes the following program areas of study: Allied Health Sciences, Computer Aided Drafting, Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education, Criminal Justice, Business Administration, Information Technology, Visual Communications, Welding, Automotive Technology, Auto Body Repair, Construction Technology, HVAC, Masonry, CAD, and Electrical Technology. A student must enroll in one course from one of these areas and may then take one or two general education courses. The student is responsible for the purchase of textbooks. (Note: A student must maintain enrollment in the technical (SEEK) qualified course in order to remain eligible for the tuition waiver; otherwise the student is responsible for the tuition expenses for all coursework).
High School juniors and seniors are eligible to complete an application and enroll in college level courses with appropriate assessment and placement scores. The student must have appropriate ACT scores in Writing (18 or above), Math (19 or above) and Reading (20 or above) or equivalent scores on the COMPASS. Somerset Community College offers some college level courses with the local high schools (dual credit) but students are eligible to take classes at SCC campuses or centers. High school students are eligible for a 50% tuition waiver. The student is responsible for the purchase of textbooks or access codes needed for the class. All students must submit an application, test scores and a letter of good standing from their respective high school counselor/ principal.
